Graph of hourly avg kWh electricity output per kW of Solar PV installed in Chilchota, Mexico (by season)

Chilchota, Michoacán, Mexico represents an excellent location for year-round solar photovoltaic energy generation. Located in the tropical zone at coordinates 19.8134°N, -102.1011°W, this area benefits from consistent sunlight throughout most of the year, with seasons typically defined by wet and dry periods rather than significant temperature variations.

Solar Energy Production Potential

The solar energy output data for Chilchota shows strong and consistent performance across all seasons. During summer months, solar panels can be expected to generate 5.75 kWh per day for each kilowatt of installed capacity. Autumn production remains similarly robust at 5.65 kWh/day per kW, while winter shows a slight increase to 5.99 kWh/day per kW. Spring emerges as the optimal season for solar energy generation at this location, producing an impressive 8.06 kWh/day per kW of installed solar capacity. This makes spring the ideal time of year for maximum solar energy production in Chilchota, Michoacán, with output significantly higher than other seasons. For installations using fixed solar panels at this location, the ideal tilt angle to maximize total year-round production is 19 degrees facing South. This angle has been calculated to optimize solar collection throughout the entire year by accounting for the sun's varying position and the Earth's elliptical orbit patterns.

Environmental and Weather Factors

Several local factors could potentially impact solar energy production in Chilchota and require consideration during installation planning. The tropical climate brings distinct wet and dry seasons, with the rainy period typically occurring during summer and early autumn months. Heavy rainfall and frequent cloud cover during wet seasons can temporarily reduce solar panel efficiency. Additionally, high humidity levels common in tropical regions may lead to increased moisture-related issues if panels are not properly sealed and ventilated. Dust accumulation presents another significant concern, particularly during the dry season when winds can carry fine particles that settle on panel surfaces. Even a thin layer of dust can notably reduce solar energy output by blocking sunlight from reaching the photovoltaic cells. The tropical location also means intense UV radiation and high temperatures year-round, which can accelerate the degradation of solar panel materials and reduce their lifespan if not properly managed.

Preventative Measures for Optimal Performance

Several preventative measures can help ensure maximum energy production from solar installations in Chilchota:
  • Install panels with adequate ventilation spacing underneath to prevent overheating and allow air circulation
  • Use high-quality, UV-resistant materials and coatings designed for tropical climates
  • Implement regular cleaning schedules, particularly during dry seasons, to remove dust and debris
  • Ensure proper waterproofing and drainage systems to handle heavy rainfall periods
  • Select panels and inverters rated for high-temperature operation and tropical humidity conditions
Regular maintenance becomes particularly important in this climate. Monthly cleaning during dry periods and post-storm inspections during wet seasons will help maintain optimal performance. Installing monitoring systems can also help identify performance issues quickly, allowing for prompt maintenance when needed. Despite these considerations, Chilchota's consistent solar energy output throughout the year, particularly the excellent spring production levels, makes it a highly favorable location for solar photovoltaic installations when proper planning and maintenance practices are implemented.

Note: The Tropics are located between 23.5° North and -23.5° South of the equator.

Ideally tilt fixed solar panels 19° South in Chilchota, Mexico

To maximize your solar PV system's energy output in Chilchota, Mexico (Lat/Long 19.8134, -102.1011) throughout the year, you should tilt your panels at an angle of 19° South for fixed panel installations.

As the Earth revolves around the Sun each year, the maximum angle of elevation of the Sun varies by +/- 23.45 degrees from its equinox elevation angle for a particular latitude. Finding the exact optimal angle to maximise solar PV production throughout the year can be challenging, but with careful consideration of historical solar energy and meteorological data for a certain location, it can be done precisely.

We use our own calculation, which incorporates NASA solar and meteorological data for the exact Lat/Long coordinates, to determine the ideal tilt angle of a solar panel that will yield maximum annual solar output. We calculate the optimal angle for each day of the year, taking into account its contribution to the yearly total PV potential at that specific location.

Seasonally adjusted solar panel tilt angles for Chilchota, Mexico

If you can adjust the tilt angle of your solar PV panels, please refer to the seasonal tilt angles below for optimal solar energy production in Chilchota, Mexico. As mentioned earlier, for fixed-panel solar PV installations, it is optimal to maintain a 19° South tilt angle throughout the year.

Overall Best Summer Angle Overall Best Autumn Angle Overall Best Winter Angle Overall Best Spring Angle
4° South in Summer 26° South in Autumn 35° South in Winter 13° South in Spring

Assuming you can modify the tilt angle of your solar PV panels throughout the year, you can optimize your solar generation in Chilchota, Mexico as follows: In Summer, set the angle of your panels to 4° facing South. In Autumn, tilt panels to 26° facing South for maximum generation. During Winter, adjust your solar panels to a 35° angle towards the South for optimal energy production. Lastly, in Spring, position your panels at a 13° angle facing South to capture the most solar energy in Chilchota, Mexico.

Our recommendations take into account more than just latitude and Earth's position in its elliptical orbit around the Sun. We also incorporate historical solar and meteorological data from NASA's Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resources (POWER) API to assign a weight to each ideal angle for each day based on its historical contribution to overall solar PV potential during a specific season.

This approach allows us to provide much more accurate recommendations than relying solely on latitude, as it considers unique weather conditions in different locations sharing the same latitude worldwide.

Topography for solar PV around Chilchota, Mexico

Topography and Terrain Around Chilchota

Chilchota sits in the heart of Michoacán state within Mexico's Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, a region characterized by rolling hills, volcanic plateaus, and relatively gentle terrain. The municipality occupies part of the Purépecha Plateau, where elevations typically range from 1,800 to 2,200 meters above sea level. This elevated position creates a landscape of undulating hills interspersed with broad valleys and mesa-like formations that have been shaped by ancient volcanic activity.

The immediate area around Chilchota features predominantly agricultural land with gentle slopes that rarely exceed 15 degrees. The terrain consists of fertile volcanic soils that have been extensively cultivated for centuries, creating a patchwork of farmland, pastures, and small settlements. Lake Pátzcuaro lies approximately 30 kilometers to the southeast, while the larger Lake Chapala sits about 60 kilometers to the northeast, both contributing to the region's relatively stable climate patterns.

The topography is punctuated by several small volcanic cones and hills that rise modestly above the surrounding plateau. These formations, while not dramatically steep, create a varied landscape with natural drainage patterns that flow generally northward toward the Lerma River system. The volcanic origin of the terrain has resulted in well-drained soils and stable geological conditions throughout most of the area.

Optimal Areas for Large-Scale Solar Development

The most promising locations for extensive solar photovoltaic installations lie in the broad valleys and mesa tops that extend north and west of Chilchota. These areas offer the ideal combination of minimal slope, stable geology, and sufficient open space for large-scale development. The relatively flat agricultural plains that stretch toward the municipalities of Tangancícuaro and Zamora present particularly attractive opportunities, as they feature gentle gradients of less than 5 degrees across extensive areas.

The elevated plateau regions southwest of Chilchota, toward the community of Carapan, also provide excellent potential for solar development. These mesa-like formations offer naturally level surfaces with minimal vegetation and limited agricultural use, making them ideal candidates for utility-scale solar farms. The stable volcanic bedrock in these areas would provide solid foundations for mounting systems while minimizing construction challenges.

Areas to the northwest, extending toward the Tangancícuaro valley, present another zone of high potential. This region features expansive flat terrain with excellent accessibility via existing road networks. The combination of level topography, minimal shading from surrounding hills, and proximity to existing electrical infrastructure makes this area particularly well-suited for large installations.

The eastern approaches toward the Purépecha communities, while scenic, tend to be more dissected by small valleys and steeper hillsides, making them less ideal for extensive solar development. Similarly, areas immediately adjacent to Lake Pátzcuaro and its watershed may face environmental restrictions that could complicate large-scale projects. The optimal zones remain those broad, gently sloping areas where agricultural use is less intensive and where the natural topography provides stable, accessible terrain for solar infrastructure development.
